Watch Hill Carousel Restoration

The Watch Hill Carousel has been a constant in my life since I was first asked to restore it in the early 1990’s. Probably the oldest working carousel in the country, thee horses were carved originally as rocking hoses in the 1860‘s.They have carved nostrals, teeth and  grinning mouths. The eyes are sulfide marbles. The saddles are real leather and the manes and tails are real horse hair.

The rounding boards or paintings are replicas of  the works of turn of the century illustrators as was common in carousels before electric lights could be used as decorations.
